The Last Ninja series have achieved cult status since they first appeared on the 8bit machines in the early 80s. Ninja Remix is a remake of original The Last Ninja, but released only for the Commodore Amiga and the Atari ST computers. Not to be confused with the 8-bit (C64, ZX Spectrum, CPC) release Last Ninja Remix, which was an updated version of The Last Ninja 2!
 
Review
Ninja RemixThe game story follows the story of the original Last Ninja series. For over 200 years the Fugiwara Clan had ruled the lands, taking whatever they wanted and making the lives of the common folk a living hell. Eventually these people became tired of this unfair regime and left their homes to dwell in the mountains and form their own clan. And so...the Ninja has born... For centuries they remained in the mountains and eventually they became the most feared of warriors, mainly due to their mastery of a range of weapons and the total control they had over their mind and body. The evil Emperor Kunitoki and his army though trapped them in the island of Lin Fen, a spiritual place for the Ninjas gathering once a decade, and soon slaughter most of them. But only one Ninja was not in that island, being left behind to the Ninja village to guard their master, the White Ninja. That ninja, named Armakuni, must go to the Lin Fen island to avenge his friends and kill the evil shogun, Kunitoki!
The action takes place through various locations within the island. The game concept is the same of the first two episodes (Last Ninja 1 and 2), meaning an adventure with beat 'em up action! You may use your martial-arts techniques (kicks and punches) but you can also leap through the air as a well-trained ninja! Your health bar is crucial when fighting with Kunitoki's guards found on your way, which may also have weapons (such as nunjakus and poles) rather than their fists and kicks! But once defeated, you can collect their weapon and use it for yourself!
Controls though are a bit awkward as in all installment of the series. Playing in a pseudo-3D environment, and in order to fight, you must hold the fire button while choosing a particular direction in order to kick or punch your opponent (or even when collecting an object!). This can, sometimes, be frustrating as your ninja has to stay still on screen rather than moving around to avoid i.e. enemy hits. Weapons, like the ninjato, nunchaku, staff, shuriken and smoke bombs, can be equipped. Other than just killing nasties, the game contains a blend of exploration and puzzle solving much like its predecessors. The guards are not the only hazards that you will come across. Poisoned water and murky swamps are in various locations on the island and you need skills to traverse them (a full life is lost each time you accidentally jump and fall onto one of them).
Last Ninja Remix is an also great addition to the series, offering great gameplay interest as long as you master the controls since it continues to be troublesome. Note that the game also offers a disk saving option!

The Last ninja series offered great pseudo-3D graphics, and this is not an exclusion. The ST version is similar to the Amiga one in terms of graphics. The island screens are beautifully designed and colored while the sprites are well drawn with nice animation. A lot of attention has been paid to the color and detail of the scenery, this is obvious, while the screen update is extremely quick (in comparison to the previous parts of the series).
Much like its predecessors, the sound is sensational, although lacks sound FX. Both intro and in-game soundtracks (composed by Jochen Hippel) are one of the finest, most robust chiptune soundtracks ever composed, being a mix of oriental and...Disco tunes!
