The game is largely based on the Indiana Jones movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. Set in 1945, British agent Rick Dangerous travels to the Amazon jungle to search for the lost Goolu tribe. His plane crashes in the jungle, and Rick must escape from the enraged Goolu. When the game starts Rick finds himself in a cave running from a rolling boulder, a famous scene from the Indiana Jones movie.
Rick can jump and climb, and carry a limited amount of bombs and ammunition for his gun. The gun is mostly used to shoot enemies, although most traps that can kill Rick can also kill his enemies if used correctly. The bombs are generally used for puzzle solving, such as blowing out certain blocks.
The C64 version is easily identifiable by the SID sounds, the many and varied but slightly dull colors, the bizarre mixture of single and double-pixel graphics, and the low-budget intro screens. The graphics are more detailed than the Spectrum and CPC versions; however, whereas the sprite for Rick is built with single-pixel graphics and looks remarkably close to the 16-bit version, and the background is single-pixel and two-color, the foreground scenery is limited to the rather ugly double-pixel graphics for the C64. Sprites and scrolling are way smoother and faster on the C64 and thus, the game play better.
Soundwise, the C64 version is great, offering the original intro tune (found on the Amiga and ST) as well as few nicely (and funny) composed SFX. Note also that there are some short tunes playing at the beginning of each stage here (found also on the more advance 16bit versions and the 8bit 128k Spectrum models)!
