| The PlayStation 3 (commonly abbreviated to PS3) is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment, and the successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the PlayStation series. The PlayStation 3 competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. One of the very unique for its time feature is the use of Blu-ray drive which enables the system to play BD movies (also used as higher storage capacity for games allowing more data-capacity for textures to be loaded in games). Also the PlayStation 3 uses the Cell microprocessor, designed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM, as its CPU, which is made up of one 3.2 GHz PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and eight Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). Although the horsepower of its core (found to be more capable from its main competitor, the XBOX 360), the complexity on programming this cpu architecture found to be too hard for the developers. Thus, a very limited number of games have taken the advantage of this architecture while the rest of the titles were similar to the competition. | |
