STORY / GAMEPLAY
After its great success on the Playstation Namco's classic Ridge Racer franchise hit Nintendo 64 as Ridge Racer 64, a sort of a PSX semi-port, complete with new tracks and cars, a four-player mode, a brutally fast sensation of speed and an all new gameplay mechanics to boot. It also features its very own set of desert tracks exclusively for the Nintendo 64. The game has 25 cars, many of which are not available at first and must gradually be unlocked. The game brings an innovation with a remarkably well designed new gameplay mechanics that enables players to use full 360 degree power-slides to zip around sharp turns without losing speed. The game also supports a multiplayer mode.
GRAPHICS / SOUND
The N64 Ridge Racer has solid frame-rate and impressive looks, much like the arcade version and it's slightly better than the Playstation. The environments are colorful and detailed and while vehicles are decidedly low in polygon-count they still come off great! The game's sound features some nice soundtracks during racing, the announcer's sampled voice and real car sound effects.
