STORY / GAMEPLAY Racing games do not actually have any story to tell but they share one main cause: To win each race! The Need For Speed (or Road Track Presents: The Need For Speed) is the first racing game of a very wide series, and a very realistic one for its time! In this game you can select your favorite super-car among some great automobile manufacturers like Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Toyota, NSX, Viper etc with a main goal to drive through each track as fast as you can competing with other skillful opponents! You also have the option to choose nighttime or daytime races, but in both cases you must always be aware of the Police Patrols. The Police sends forces to seek anyone who exceeds speed limits. Since you have to drive as fast as hell, the Police scanner will spot you and an APB will be initiated, until you are dead stopped and fined. The gameplay is absolutely fun and, fortunately, the difficulty level rises in a gradual manner so you'll have a decent amount of time to learn how to control your fast vehicle.
GRAPHICS / SOUND The 3DO version is the first ever on this series and it sports stunning visuals (almost digitized), with hundreds of colors on screen, cool feel of speed and almost flawless animation. Apart from the two different third person cameras, there is also a dashboard camera available and the details shown from this perspective are really impressive (i.e. the dashboard of the car, the speedometer's real-time functions and more). The game's sound is fully sampled and includes all the necessary "racing" sound effects (engines, brakes etc) plus some cool CD quality music scores. Overall, The Need For Speed is probably the best racing game on the 3DO games library.
